Twins First Birthday

Today was the day-Ethan and Chloe’s first birthday party!!  I got up early this morning to decorate all those cupcakes (four dozen to be exact) and their smash cakes.

I made the cupcake towers using an idea I got from Martha Stewart Weddings.  Of course I thought there was a 6” box in the sets that I bought but there wasn’t so I had to adjust my design a bit and couldn’t include a third tier but that’s o.k. They still turned out cute!  All you need to make these is paper mache boxes, scrapbook paper, and glue.  Super easy!

Chloe’s smash cake was a small chocolate half round cake made to look like a flower with pink Italian Meringue Buttercream frosting, fondant/gumpaste flower petals and a fondant/gumpaste butterfly with a 1 body.  It was seriously cute!!!

Ethan’s smash cake was a 6” single layer chocolate cake with blue Italian Meringue Buttercream, a gumpaste frog, lily pad, and 1 “flies” on wire.

If I may say so myself the best part of the display are the adorable cupcakes!  Chloe’s cupcakes were all vanilla flavor with either pink or purple and white marble, the opposite color IMBC and three jumbo sprinkles on the right side.

Ethan’s cupcakes were banana with blue IMBC and green jumbo sprinkles and oreo surprise cupcakes with green IMBC and blue jumbo sprinkles.

The desserts were a hit and definitely my favorite cake project so far!  Now on to next week.  Hmmm…..

Spooky Halloween Cupcakes

In addition to the twins’ birthday party this weekend I also made some cupcakes for my son’s school’s fall festival.  They have a cake walk and the parents donate baked goods that they have either purchased or made.  Last year I made a chocolate chip cake that looked like a jack-o-lantern and a carrot cake with a fall/leaf motif.  By last year’s standards I am skimping a bit, but I am also donating two bags of AVON products for their silent auction.  I sell AVON as a means to actually (try) make money.

I made Black Forest Stuffed Cupcakes (don’t they look great) from and Oreo Surprise Cupcakes.  Oreo surprise cupcakes are just your favorite chocolate cupcakes with an Oreo cookie in the middle.  I put 1-2 tablespoons of batter in the cupcake liner then the Oreo push down just slightly and top off with more chocolate cake batter.  Kids love them!!  Both kinds of cupcakes are topped with Italian meringue buttercream and Halloween themed sprinkles-bones, eyeballs, spiders, and bats.

All are packaged in these adorable treat boxes with Halloween themed sprinkles that I found at Target.  I think they are going to be a big hit!!

Dad’s 50th Corset Cake

corsetMy dad’s 50th birthday party is tonight and my step-mom asked me to make him a “boob” cake.  Let’s just say I had a few reservations!  I have made one before and it was very adult in nature, so needless to say I didn’t really want to think of my dad and nipples in the same thought-EVER!  I decided to do a corset instead-still a little racy, but not XXX.  The body is chocolate fudge cake with mint chocolate chip filling and chocolate Italian meringue buttercream-the breasts are lemon with lemon curd filling (yes, I went there!) and vanilla Italian meringue buttercream.   All is covered in vanilla fondant.  Here’s the recipe for the mint chocolate chip filling-delicious!!

1 c heavy cream

3 T confectioners sugar

1 t Lorann mint chocolate chip oil

green food coloring

chocolate shavings (optional)

Whip the heavy cream, confectioners sugar, flavor oil, and food coloring until light and fluffy.  Add chocolate shavings.  I shave mine with a microplane so they are very small flecks of chocolate.  They are more for looks than taste.corset2

As you can see from the pictures I had a few problems.  On the bra part I had some cracking issues.  I was using a new fondant recipe I’ve been wanting to try and I think I must have done something wrong with it.  Overall it still turned out o.k. and I think he will really like it.

First Birthday Butterfly

Let me start by saying that next weekend our friends are having their twins’, Ethan and Chloe, first birthday party.  I am making their cakes and decided it would be cute to do two cupcake towers with their smash cakes on top of each and coordinating cupcakes.  Why do I always make things harder than they really have to be?  Oh well, I love the design I’ve come up with and I’m stickin’ to it!

I started on some of the fondant/gumpaste elements today for obviuos reasons…1) Drying time, 2) screw up and try again time, 3) don’t like it and try again time.  For Miss Chloe I’ve decided her smash cake is going to be a small half round cake with fondant/gumpaste flower petals surrounding it so it looks like one big flower with a small butterfly.  The butterfly’s body is a “1”.  All is assembled with the butterfly now it just has to dry.  I am hoping that it will actually stay together because it is adorable!!!

I am going to try to start on Ethan’s later this week.  I also have to make my dad’s birthday cake for this weekend.  It’s his surprise 50th!  So I am going to be a busy little bee the next couple of weeks.

Hooray for Burnt Butter Frosting!!

So, Will and I finished our cupcakes this morning.  We made burnt butter frosting to go with our peanut butter cupcakes.  This is seriously the pb cupcakesbest stuff I have ever tasted.  Not even joking!!  I got the recipe from  Click on the word recipe to go directly to it.

I also took the time to play with a little bit of fondant to make some pretty flowers and I tried my hand at poured fondant.  Since I am the only girl in a house full of boys I have to get the pretty pink and purple stuff in somehow so when I am playing/experimenting that’s just what I do.

The poured fondant wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be.  After I’ve done it a few times I’ll post a tutorial.  Will got out the gumpaste tools and tried his hand at fondant modeling.  Too cute!  You can see my new cupcake pics in the Cupcake Gallery.

What a great day!!

First Day of School-Peanut Butter Cupcakes

So today was my youngest son’s first day of “school”-it’s really Mom’s Morning Out-a nursery school atmosphere that takes place once a week. It’s a big step for us though-he’s never even been to daycare. Well, he wanted cake for breakfast. No, I didn’t let him eat cake at 7:00 a.m.-I didn’t have any anyway. But I did make him some peanut butter cupcakes after school.

Cream together 1/3 c butter, 1/2 c peanut butter, and 1 1/4 c packed brown sugar.  Beat in 1 egg and 1 t vanilla extract.  Combine 2 c all purpose flour, 2 t baking powder, 1/2 t salt, and 1/4 t ground cinnamon.  Alternate adding the dry ingredients with 3/4 c  milk.  Bake in muffin tin lined with paper cups at 350 for about 25 min-30 min.  Cool in tin for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack.

The house smelled incredible while these were baking!!  After his nap we didn’t have time to get frosting made, but tomorrow morning you can bet we will be in the kitchen trying out our new recipe for the week: Burnt butter frosting. The recipe sounds delicious-can’t wait to share!!

Let’s get started!

One of my favorite cuppies!

One of my favorite cuppies!

Well, this is my first official blog entry. It’s my dream to own/operate my own little slice of heaven also known as Cake Rush-my very own specialty bakery specializing in decadent cakes and cupcakes. Until that day comes I want to experiment in every way I can with different baking and decorating techniques. For some crazy reason I’ve decided to share it with the world. At least once per week I’ve devoted to trying a new recipe or decorating technique. Let’s see how it goes!!
